Wissahickon Park

Wissahickon Park was an active Township park in the West Ambler community of Whitpain Township for decades before it closed in 1984 due to asbestos concerns.  The triangular parcel is bordered by Ambler Alley, the Wissahickon Creek, and the Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve.

Whitpain Township has been working for over a decade to remediate the site and redevelop the site as a park to benefit the local community.  This has been a lengthy process due to the environmental concerns. The Township has worked cooperatively with the US Environmental Protection Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the US Army Corp of Engineers.

In mid-2024 the Township received approval from the regulatory agencies to move forward with initial construction of a community park. The current plan is to go through the bidding process and award a construction contract for phase one by early 2025 with construction expected to begin later in 2025.  The project will largely be funded via two state grants with matching funds provided by Whitpain Township.

Construction Updates

Construction activities at Wissahickon Park began the week of April 7, 2025.  Park construction will continue for the next several months. The Township has awarded a general construction contract to MECO Constructors of Bensalem, PA, and an electrical contract to Wise Electrical of Glenside, PA. The Township has an extensive health and safety plan in place for construction that has been shared with the various regulatory agencies. The Township has also contracted with Montrose Environmental to perform air monitor testing during construction to ensure the health and safety of nearby residents. Please note, air monitoring will only occur during active construction involving earth moving activities.

Construction updates and air monitoring reports will be posted to this website on a regular basis.

If you have questions about the project, please email wisspark@whitpaintownship.org or call the Township at 610-277-2400.
