The Police Department enforces animal control regulations. The department offers programs to educate residents regarding responsible pet ownership, provides for the sanitary, safe, and humane housing for impounded animals and enforces animal control ordinances relating to the leash law, scoop law, nuisance-barking, vicious animals, and cruelty to animals.
Pennsylvania Dog Law Act 225 states that all dogs must be under the direct control of its owner or handler. The best way to control your dog is with a leash. Remember, dogs are personal property. The owner or owners are responsible for any damage caused by their dog while it is running-at-large. Violations could result in a maximum fine of $300.00. Third and subsequent offenses are misdemeanor violations.
Dogs are permitted in Whitpain Township parks, open space, and trails except Wentz Run Park, Stony Creek Sports Park, and West Side Park. When in Township parks, all dogs must be on leashes no longer than 10 feet and under the control of the owner or individual in charge at all times. (Ordinance 329)
Owners of barking dogs that are causing a nuisance can be fined for violating the township’s ordinance on Disturbing the Peace (Ordinance 126).
Please contact the Police Department at 610-279-9033 with questions on animal control or concerns about possible violations.
