The Whitpain Township Shade Tree Commission (STC) is charged with overseeing and enhancing trees in Whitpain Township including individual specimens and forested areas on Township property. In addition the Commission shall be an advocate for all trees throughout Whitpain Township. Please click here to read the Commission’s full mission statement.
Tree City USA
Whitpain Township has been designated as a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Day Foundation since 1994. This is a national recognition for communities that effectively manage their public tree resources. Since 1999, the Township has annually received the Foundation's Growth Award, which is the next level of recognition that Tree City USA communities can achieve. In 2009, after earning the Growth Award for ten consecutive years, Whitpain was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Sterling Community, its highest level of recognition. Only a handful of other Pennsylvania communities have ever earned this distinction.
The Commission meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Free Street Tree Pilot Program
Whitpain Township's Shade Tree Commission has announced a Free Street Pilot Program. Through this pilot program, a limited number of property owners will be able to obtain a free street tree, 2" - 2.5" Cal., for their property if they meet certain criteriea. This program is limited and only one street tree will be provided to the first qualifying candidates. Please click here to learn more.
For 21 consecutive years the Shade Tree Commission has sponsored an annual tree giveaway as part of the Arbor Day Beautification Program. Last year 400 trees and mulch were given away free of charge to Township residents. The annual event, which takes place in the spring, moved to Prophecy Creek Park in 2015.
Each year the Shade Tree Commission engages in special projects to help beautify the Township. To see an example of these projects, please click here to learn more about plantings at the Wissahickon Valley Public Library Blue Bell Branch.
The Commission is also active in the Township’s annual Earth Day Celebration. As part of this annual celebration over 100 elementary school aged children from Lower Gwynedd, Shady Grove, Stony Creek, Blue Bell, St. Helena's and Holy Rosary are recognized for their environmentally focused art work and poetry. Members of the Shade Tree Commission not only help judge the art work and poetry, but they also present saplings to the winners.
Wood Chip Bin
The Township's popular woodchip bin is located on Jolly Road, between Meraid Lake and Wentz Road.
This self-serve facility is free and open 7 days per week from dawn to dusk. The woodchip bin is a pick-up only facility and no dumping of any kind is permitted.
